Aunty Narelle Thomas is a proud Yuin/Gunai Kurnai woman, a respected Elder, and one of the senior artists at Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation. With decades of experience and a strong cultural foundation, Aunty Narelle has played a vital role in shaping Coomaditchie’s creative and cultural presence in the community and beyond.
Her artwork is grounded in story, memory and place, carrying the knowledge and strength of her people. Through bold lines, rich colours and layered patterns, Aunty Narelle’s paintings share the lived experiences of the East Coast Saltwater Peoples and reflect a deep connection to Country and community.
For over 30 years, Aunty Narelle has painted alongside her sister, Aunty Lorraine Brown. Their collaboration is built on mutual respect and an intuitive creative rhythm. Aunty Lorraine is known for her detailed, intricate work, while Aunty Narelle brings those details to life through colour and movement. Together, they work as one—like dancers in sync—each responding to the other’s lead, yet moving together with a shared sense of purpose and vision.
As an Elder, Aunty Narelle continues to guide younger generations, sharing cultural knowledge and supporting others through art, storytelling and leadership. Her influence extends well beyond the canvas, leaving a lasting impact on her community and on all those who engage with her work.
